Andy's Cyber Ride: Old Mill and Descanso Railroad

July 2008 - A New Name

I gave Susan, my new sweety (see Wedding), total access to the railroad garden. She frowned when I reminded her it was the Mojave Desert and Southwest Mountains Railroad. Desert scaping is not her thing. Sensing that a lushious garden would be much more to her liking, I renamed the railroad. I chose as my destinations the locations of our first two dates: El Molino Viejo in San Marino, CA, and Descanso Gardens in LaCanada-Flintridge. Thus was born the Old Mill and Descanso Railroad.

I spent a number of hours this summer sculpting the roadbed for the two remaining loops.

Fred and I finshed laying up the east side retaining wall. There will be four tracks between the gray block retaining wall and the patio.

I used rainbow ledger to shore up the upper roadbed,

and I set the pond. A gentle water fall will feed the pond. Four bridges will cross the watercourse, the top bridge 30 inches higher than patio level, the lowest bridge 14 inches higher than the patio.
