Through the Bible in a Year - Advent 2016 to Last Day after Pentecost 2017

Printable .doc file

Listed here is a through the Bible in a year reading plan for the Church Year beginning the First Sunday of Advent (November 27, 2016) and ending the last day of the Church Year (December 2, 2017). The Book of Psalms in not included in this plan as I advocate reading five Psalms every day in addition to the daily readings. For a Psalms plan see Daily Psalms. (NOTE: The Daily Psalms plan includes the Book of Proverbs as a devotional option. The Book of Proverbs is also included in this reading plan.)

In this plan, the Old Testament books are roughly in chronological order. New Testament books are interspersed before, between, and after the Old Testament books to "add interest" to the reading. It is not that the Old Testament books are not interesting. It is that in reality it seems harder to read through the Old Testament books because of their length and content matter. Books are kept united so they are read through in their entirety during the span of the reading days. Books that have historical continuity (Samuel, Kings, Chronicles) are kept together for the historical flow. There may or may not be a specific purpose for the placement of New Testament books. For example Ephesians is between Ruth and the Song of Solomon because of similar content and purpose. Luke and Act begin the plan to highlight Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church prior to immersion in Genesis. John's gospel and Revelation end the readings.

There is certainly value in reading through the Bible in a year. However, this is a voluntary discipline; and one should not be overcome with guilt when days are missed. My advise is to skip the readings for missed days and pick up on the appointed reading for the day reading is resumed. Trying to "catch-up" on missed readings can be a daunting task which defeats the purpose of the discipline. If time and commitment allow, one can always go back and read the texts for missed days later in the day or at another time.
